My Personality Task

Upon examining my life and determining what affected me and shaped me and my personality i realized that there has been many different thing that have made me who i am. However, I realized that the thing that shaped and molded my personality was my relationship with Jesus. Freshman year to senior year when i had a major shift in my personality it was because of Jesus and the work that he was doing in my life that turned me from being a bitter person to being a joyful and joy filled person. I also realized that the thing in my life that has been the most consistent, and will ream the most consistent in my life is my relationship with God and my faith in him. Another thing that i discovered was that the love and the nurture of my family and the others around me has shaped me and my personality mostly for the better. This caused me to remember some of the times in my best and i was able to recall them and basically relive the moments of my life. Also the morals and the personality that has developed in my over time has shaped what i am going to want in life, and want in the future. I want to be a family man first and foremost who is always there for his friends. I also realized that as I have aged I have become less and less socially inclined. I am still super social, but as I have aged i realized that i tend to be less social until i trust the ones around me. Ultimately this also showed me that it truly hope that I am not done growing yet, the only thing that I want to stop growing is my stomach outwardly. This has truly allowed me to see that in life there are a lot of things that determine what I was, what I am, and what I will be.

Freud's Personality Theory

Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory

Who is Freud and what is Freud’s theory on personality?

Who and What:

See the source image
Freud was a Psychologist from Austria who pioneered one of the predominant branches of psychology for a good while. This was known as psychoanalysis. In this Psychodynamic theory of Freud’s he determined that we as human beings did not have free will because we did not have control over the behaviors that we had. He believed that all behavior was predetermined, and they were held in the unconscious. He believed that the answer to these behaviors lay in three aspects the Id, the Ego, and the Super Ego. The Id is the instant gratification factor, it takes all the desires that we have as humans and wants us to have them now. The Id lies on the unconscious level of the human mind. The Super Ego is the human’s sense of what is right and what is wrong (also known as morality). This is what makes us want to achieve perfection, and when we miss the mark we tend to feel guilty because of this. The Ego is the intermediate mediator between both the Id and the Super Ego. It operates in the conscious and it is in charge of the decision making process when it comes to the personality. Freud believed that Psychological problems arose when one of these three forces pushed too strongly in one direction, and because of this push it leads to the manufacturing of what Freud called defense mechanisms that are used to maintain a positive self-image. Freud believed that the Mechanisms were in a way good and needed, but if they became over used then they could be seen in a negative light (Saylor).

Freud showed that there were five stages, and if one of these stages was missed then there would be personality affects. These stages are oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital. Each one of these would involve a certain pleasure being met correctly then the person would develop normally in personality. However, if one of these stages were missed, or not filled adequately then the personality development would suffer (Saylor). http://www.saylor.org/books

Uses:

This theory can be and has been applied in many ways. One instance is the way Carl Rodgers interviews his client. The women talks of how she is feeling guilty for certain things, and she even claims that maybe if her mother raised her differently she might not feel as guilty. She has put up the defense mechanism of deflection. She tried to place the blame on her mother, and she even tried to put the blame on how she was made (Carl Rodgers). The recognition of these mechanisms can allow for the therapist to bring to light the how the client is using these mechanisms to try and keep a positive self-image. This can allow the therapist to reveal this to the client and allow for the addressing of these things. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HarEcd4bt-s

My Perspective:

As a Christian man I believe that the Lord is trying to reveal himself in all things, and I do believe Freud was on to something with his use of the Id, Super Ego, and the Ego. We are made in the image of a Triune God (three parts) so this would make sense as to why we have those three aspects, however I truly believe it is not the Id, the Ego, and the super Ego. No it is the mind, body, and soul that makes our personality what it is. Yes there are aspects of morality in each human, and a wanting for gratification, and yes there is also a mediator trying to help make the right decision. In my belief there are not necessarily stages as Freud claimed one has to undergo it is more so of how one is raised. It is more needs of nurture that and love that tend to shape personality. The way in which one is perceived by a parent and if the loving needs of the child is met by the parent. However, no matter how the personality is developed there is always the case of Jesus getting a hold of one’s life and having complete control in changing the personality of a person. This has happened to me I was a person who was easily angered and somewhat bitter, however the Lord grabbed a hold of my life and changed that personality. So yes Freud had the right idea with the way personality was developed, however it was through the body, soul, and mind partnered alongside the care and the nurturing, or lack thereof by a parent figure that shapes personality. Ultimately though the Lord will and can shape personality in the ways he sees fit.

Nature vs. Nurture

Nature vs. Nurture

What is the Debate?

In the area of development the idea of whether a child’s development is determined more by nature aka genetics, or nurture aka the way in which the child is brought up. In this debate there are many proponents for both the side of nature and nurture. The people who side with the nature side of the debate with claim that all behavior, personality, and physical traits. Whereas the ones who side with nurture claim that the environment that people are brought up in is what determines the behavior and personality of people, and can even have an effect on certain physical traits.  This is a question that still looms over the heads of many scientist. The reason this is still such a large question is that the methods that were developed are many times inconclusive. Another reason this has become such a popular question that is asked is because many times people tend to give too much or too little responsibility to free will, and or genetics. However, at some level both of these things play a large role in the development of all humans. Many times even when we as humans think of certain characteristics that make up our body we believe them to be in our control in some way, but also out of our control in others. Other reasons this is such a hard questions to answer is the fact that it is hard to do experiments to humans. For example human babies cannot be taken from their human mothers to be raised by other mothers. With animals however this can be performed. So one of the biggest issue with this is the lack of experimentation that can be done.

Real Life Examples:

In this debate there are many arguments on both sides that can be considered very useful and very important in explaining the argument that each side has.

Nature
Nurture
1. Study Identical of Twins
1.Adoption
2. Breading Dogs
2.Study of Fraternal Twins
3.Adoption
3.Homosexuality
4.Homosexuality
4.Personality
5.Personality
5.Obesity

Each of these things can be used to explain and argue for both sides of the spectrum. For instance many people in the nature side believe homosexuality is an inherited trait, but many on the nurture side believe this comes about form how the Children were raised growing up. However, on major argument used by the nature side is the breeding of dogs. For many years and years dogs have been bread in such a way as to make the offspring have the desired behavior of the parent. One of the strongest arguments used on the side of nurture is the fact that if a child (who was born to English speaking parents) is adopted by a family (who is Spanish speaking) then the child will speak Spanish because that is what the child grew up hearing.

What is Learned?

See the source image
There have been many things that have been learned recently about the nature of genes in the debate of nurture v. nature. For example, scientist learned that the closer in relation genetically people are the more they will have in common and share both in terms of behavior, genetics, and personality (NOBA). Despite knowing what they do know, scientist, understand that when talking about behavior one cannot rely merely on the idea of the environment playing the only role. Genetics need to be taken into consideration also, but neither can genetics be relied on solely for answers about behavior environment must also be taken into account. This is very important to understand. One cannot just blame the behaviors, personality, and or traits of a person on their genetics, and one can also not just blame these things on the person’s environment. Both of these things must be taken into consideration, and both given validity to help determine why and what people do.

Personal Application:

I work at Beltway Park Kids Club every day I get out of class. I have to deal with many different kids that come from many different backgrounds. Several times these kids have acted up and not always have been the best. I know that many of these kids do in fact come from broken homes. Which can play a major factor in the way in which these kids act. However, there background and home life is no excuse for this bad behavior. Taking into consideration how they were raised I can have a softer heart towards these Children because me being nice and kind to them might be the only kindness and love they get from their day. Yes genetics play a huge role in behavior, but so do environments. Because of this I can do all I can to make the environment they come to every day after school one of love and security to help the kids know they are loved and foster good behavior.

Psychics from A Christian Woman's View

Psychics and Religion

Introduction:

In the past 30 to 40 years the interest in Psychic ability, and how people go about acquiring and using that has really picked up. Research on this topic has also increased for many reasons from military purposes all the way to just being able to better understand what this ability means. There have been many experiments, tests, and interviews done in hopes of coming to the answers of what this all this Psychic talk means. In this blog it will shed light on the experiments done, and how a Christian woman views these issues. The psychic issue is not the only thing that the researchers conducted experiments, they also put to the test whether twins and married couples could sense what their sibling or significant other could sense a stimuli given to their significant other or sibling. They determined that there were many couples and twins could in fact determine the stimuli.

See the source image

The Interview:

When asked the Christian woman named Kimberly she did not believe in psychic ability, she however did believe that was possible for God to prompt visions and prophecies as told about in the Bible. She also stated that she did not believe that one was struck with lightning or had a near death experience could eventually be able to for tell the future. She did however agree that humans can have glimpses into the future, but only when prompted by the revelation from God as divine wisdom or divine knowledge. She further concluded that she believes that the psychic as seen in today’s society is playing somewhat of the role of God because they have commercialized themselves, and claim that they can tell the future or also none as reading a person’s future. She believed that this has become far more of a ploy than actual truth. She did however believe that in twins and married couples could read certain stimuli given to the other of the pair her explanation for this was that in the bible a man and a woman became married they become one so they begin to sense those things from each other. My views on this are the same as Kimberly, and I truly believe the same things about the marriage and divine revelation

Sensation and Perception

Physical Senses:

The human life is evaluated and even understood through the use of the sense, and even the perception that the humans have also. The way we live and what we do as humans can be shaped in a variety of ways all the way from what we eat and even to what we watch. All of these things affect how we interpret the life that we live. Many times these things which we sense and perceive are things that are physical. What is used to sense and perceive are the five human senses. One of the best examples of our senses allowing us to perceive things is the through the use of Anamorphic illusions. These are pictures that are printed in such a way that when view from one angle it is perceived it to be a three dimensional object, however they are indeed two dimensional pieces of paper. The way in which these pieces of paper are aligned and viewed are what truly affect the human perception. Anamorphic Illusions

 See the source image

The Five Human Senses:

1.      Sight

2.      Taste

3.      Touch

4.      Hearing

5.      Smell

These five sense determine how we can perceive and interpret life through all of these things. Each one of these senses plays a bigger role in the way in which we interoperate the things around us.

Beyond Physical:

There are the five physical senses however are not the only way in which we as human can sense. There have been many cases and studies done by scientist that have stated that there are certain cases where people have out of body experiences, and experience things on an unconscious level. This is what they would call psychic experiences. The reason this have become such a popular thing in the last thirty years is because the military wanted to be able to use the heightened sensations and the heightened perceptions to be able to gather military intelligence. This was such a big deal because it would allow for the United States of America to have a step ahead in the Cold War. These heightened senses can be seen in out of body experiences, dreams, and even in the relationships between twins and even married couples. The experiences lead to certain things being sensed and understood because of the relationship be help by the people. This can also be seen in just everyday people for instance being able to sense if someone is staring at them. The reason many humans have this is because scientist believe that this once aided in the in survival of our ancestors. Extra-sensory perceptions 1

What I think:

I truly believe that there is a reason for these things that some people even refer to as a sixth sense, and I believe that the reason is to point to God. The Bible talks of when a man and a women become married they become one person, and for this reason is why I truly believe that some of the experiences of a husband and a wife can be sensed and felt by their partner. Truly the reason for all of these things in life is to point and outside experiences and heightened sensations is to point to the God who created everything.

Brain an Behavior

The Brain.

What is the Brain?

Why do humans have a Brain?
See the source image

Well according to the Webster-Dictionary the human Brain is a portion of the central nervous system that is composed of neurons, and supporting nutritive structures that are used in integrating information from outside and inside the body to control autonomic function (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/brain). The Brain is a very specialized organ that controls the entire human body.
. The Human brain is one of the most fascinating organs as well. It is in charge of all of the functions of the human body. Telling the lungs to take in oxygen and telling the heart to beat through electrical stimuli. See the source image
(https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=pAixzxTw&id=2BF6FEF26130AD9834C1C31D49B32BFDC811BD7D&thid=OIP.pAixzxTwrFcusfoG-wOjZwHaFj&mediaurl=http%3a%2f%2fimages.iop.org%2fobjects%2fphw%2fnews%2f18%2f5%2f17%2fPW-2014-05-19-Cartlidge-laser.jpg&exph=525&expw=700&q=picture+of+firing+neurons&simid=608009209026776173&selectedIndex=0&ajaxhist=0)
The human Brain is one of, if not the most important organ that the human body contains. It can even be compared to a computer through all of the process of information transfer through the neurons in the Brain. The Brain is also in charge of memory and cognitive ability. However, in some cases this cognitive/understanding process can be limited by outside forces such as disease and other disorders. So the thing that I found the most interesting was what neuro-scientist Mehdi Oridkhani-Seyedlar had to say on the topic. He did an experiment through the studying of paying attention. He was able to determine that when one is focusing on something through covert attention it stimulates the front part of the brain which is in charge of cognitive ability. It works as a filter allowing for one thing to be focused on at a time. However in people with ADHD this filtering system was not functioning properly. It would not filter the two objects allowing both pieces of information to come in at one causing the lack of focus. However it is interesting that with the use of computes and certain games on the computer one could hone the filtering device and basically train the frontal aspect of the Brain to use the filtering system (https://www.ted.com/talks/mehdi_ordikhani_seyedlar_what_happens_in_your_brain_when_you_pay_attention/transcript#t-373264).
The Brain many people believe is for making memories and for formulating thought. Well according to Daniel Wolpert the only reason for having a Brain is to cause movement and which everything is based off of (https://www.ted.com/talks/daniel_wolpert_the_real_reason_for_brains). To a certain extent I can see to this being true because all thought is sparked by movement of electrical currents to neurons, and all movement of the body originates in the Brain. So there for one of the main functions of the Brain is to be the catalyst for all movement and actions that the body under goes.
The Brain is so complicated in all the ways that it functions, and yet its purpose so clear the Brain is many things, and the most important in my opinion is a way to understand life, love, community, and, God.
